Tasigna is a brand-name drug that treats chronic myelogenous leukemia, or CML, after initial diagnosis and in later stages of the cancer when it has not responded well to other similar drugs. CML is a cancer of the bone marrow that causes the overproduction of white blood cells. The white cells produced by the tumor are immature and defective and eventually crowd out healthy white blood cells. The active ingredient in Tasigna, nilotinib, blocks the ability of a family of proteins (tyrosine kinases) in the cancer cells that “turn on” the production of white blood cells. Tasigna is taken as a capsule twice daily. The dosage will vary.

Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, such as fever, sore throat, swelling, itching, or rash, and talk to your doctor if you suspect an allergic reaction.
