Tilia Fe is a generic women's prescription birth control pill. The active ingredients are two naturally-occurring hormones: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and norethindrone (a progestin). Tilia Fe prevents the monthly release of an egg from the ovaries. It also alters the linings of both the cervix and uterus. These changes make it difficult for sperm to travel along these linings. They also decrease the likelihood of a fertilized egg attaching to the uterine wall.
Tilia Fe is taken in a 28-day sequence. It is a “triphasic” oral contraceptive, that is, the active ingredient dosage changes each week over the 28-day regimen. The final seven tablets taken at the end of the menstrual cycle, however, are placebos that also contain a small amount of iron (ferrous fumarate) to address iron loss due to menstruation. Triphasic birth control pills are intended to control the hormone cycle more stably and reduce side effects.
Common side effects of Tilia Fe include but are not limited to menstrual changes, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, water retention, breast tenderness, and headache. Allergic reactions to Tilia Fe are extremely rare but include rashes and hives. Mood changes are often reported: mood swings, depression, and decreased sex drive.
Nursing mothers should avoid Tilia Fe because estrogens, besides decreasing breast milk, pass into the milk and affect the development of the infant.
