What is Tri-Linyah?
Tri-Linyah is a generic triphasic birth control pill. The active ingredients in Tri-Linyah ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate, are hormones that drive the physical changes throughout a woman's 28-day fertility cycle. Norgestimate is a synthetic hormone developed to reduce side effects typical of natural progestins normally found in birth control pills.
When taken for three weeks of the 28-day fertility cycle, Tri-Linyah prevents ovulation and alters the cervical and uterine linings to slow the movement of sperm and prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.
Tri-Linyah is taken daily in a 28-day sequence to match the body's natural fertility cycle. As a triphasic birth control pill, the dose of each hormone changes every 7 days for three weeks to reduce the severity of side effects that may be caused by monophasic pills that do not change the dose over the month. The final 7 tablets of the sequence are inert to allow for menstruation.
Tri-Linyah is also prescribed to treat acne in women over 15 who also desire birth control.
What are the side effects of Tri-Linyah?
Common side effects of Tri-Linyah include but are not limited to breast tenderness, headache, nausea, and irregular uterine bleeding. Serious but rare side effects may include heart problems, stroke, and liver problems. Allergic reactions to Tri-Linyah are rare and are usually due to the inactive ingredients in Tri-Linyah. These allergic reactions are often due to the inactive ingredients in Tri-Linyah.
Nursing mothers should avoid Tri-Linyah because estrogens such as ethinyl estradiol reduce breast milk production. Estrogens also pass into the milk and affect the development of the infant. Nursing mothers requiring birth control are often prescribed “mini-pills,” whose only active ingredient is a progestin.
