What is Trumenba?

Trumenba is a brand-name vaccine that provides active immunity from bacterial meningitis, an infection of the membranes (meninges) that cover the brain and provide a barrier between the brain and the rest of the body.

Bacterial meningitis is caused by the bacteria, Neisseria meningitidis, which can also infect the bloodstream. The active ingredients in the vaccine are carbohydrates that line the surface of the bacteria cell. The body mounts an immune response as if it were actually being attacked by living bacteria. The antibodies the body creates provide a long-lasting line of defense against meningitis bacteria infections.

Trumenba is injected in three doses over six months by a healthcare professional to patients who are at risk of being exposed to meningitis bacteria. Trumenba provides immunity against one strain (called “B”) of the meningitis bacteria and therefore is called a “meningococcal group B vaccine.”

What are the side effects of Trumenba?

Although not a complete list, common side effects of Trumenba include, but are not limited to, fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and joint pain.
