Does Medicare cover Viagra, and how much does it cost?

Medicare prescription plans and most healthcare plans do not cover brand-name Viagra. The generic version, sildenafil citrate, is covered more often than the brand-name drug.

If you're underinsured, you can sign up for SingleCare for free. We're always evaluating prescription prices to get you the best deal on expensive medications, like Viagra. Is there a generic of Viagra?

Pfizer Inc. manufactures the brand-name erectile dysfunction medication, Viagra. Sildenafil citrate is the generic version of Viagra, and like Viagra, is available in 25, 50, and 100 mg tablets. FDA-approved generic drugs usually have lower prices and better insurance coverage than brand-name medications. SingleCare has Viagra coupons for both the brand name and generic versions. Visit the SingleCare website or mobile app to start saving at participating U.S. pharmacies.

Note that sildenafil is also a generic drug for the brand-name Revatio. Revatio is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), which is high blood pressure in the lungs. This form of sildenafil is available in 20 mg tablets.

What is Viagra?

Viagra is a vasodilator, also known as a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor, and it is used to treat impotence (or erectile dysfunction) in male patients. When used before sexual activity, Viagra works along with sexual stimulation by increasing blood flow to the penis. This helps men get and keep an erection.

Viagra does not prevent pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.

Before taking Viagra, tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. You should not take Viagra with nitrate medications (medications used to treat chest pain) because the combination could cause dangerously low blood pressure. Nitrates include nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, and illegal street drugs called “poppers.” Viagra also interacts with various other drugs, such as Adempas (riociguat), erythromycin, ketoconazole, ritonavir, and others.

What doses of Viagra are available?

Viagra is available in 25, 50, and 100 mg tablets. It is generally taken as a one-time dose as needed, usually 30 to 60 minutes before sexual stimulation. It should not be taken more than once a day. Viagra may be taken with or without food, although a high-fat meal could delay the drug's efficacy.

Read the medication guide for more information about Viagra and/or talk to your doctor for medical advice concerning your treatment or condition.

What are the side effects of Viagra?

Some common side effects of Viagra include:

  • Headache

  • Flushing

  • Stomach problems like upset stomach or nausea

  • Vision changes, such as changes in color vision and blurry vision

  • Stuffy nose or runny nose

  • Back or muscle pain

  • Dizziness

  • Rash

If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help.

Erections should not last longer than four hours. A painful or prolonged erection is a medical emergency. If this occurs, get medical care right away to avoid permanent problems.

Sex can strain your heart. Before taking Viagra, tell your doctor if you have a history of high blood pressure or heart problems.

If you have sudden vision loss or sudden hearing loss (which may be accompanied by ringing in the ears), stop using Viagra and see a doctor right away.

This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Ask your pharmacist or doctor for more information and a complete list of possible side effects.

How long does it take for Viagra to work?

Viagra takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes to work. It should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity (but may be taken up to 4 hours before), and it requires sexual stimulation to work. Viagra can be taken with or without food. However, high-fat foods could delay the effects of Viagra. Erections should not last longer than four hours while taking Viagra. People with an erection that is prolonged or painful should seek emergency medical attention to prevent permanent problems.

Can you buy Viagra online?

Since Viagra is a prescription drug, you’ll need a prescription from a healthcare provider in order to obtain Viagra or generic sildenafil, even online. If a prescription is not required, chances are, it is a scam, and the medication is counterfeit and could even be dangerous. If you prefer to order Viagra online, your best bet is to consult with a telehealth healthcare provider who can send your prescription to an accredited pharmacy. Consult your healthcare provider for more information and questions about a Viagra prescription.
