Xelpros is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat high pressure inside the eye due to open-angle type glaucoma or other eye diseases such as ocular hypertension. This medication is similar to prostaglandin which is a natural chemical in the body. It works by regulating the movement of fluid within the eye which helps to lower pressure. Relieving intraocular pressure (IOP) inside the eye helps to prevent blindness. Xelpros is the first and only benzalkonium chloride-free (BAK-free) form of latanoprost.
Xelpros comes in the form of ophthalmic drops and is usually applied to the affected eye once daily in the evening. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Do not use this medication more frequently than what is recommended by your doctor. Using more may decrease this medication's effectiveness.
Wash hands first before applying this ophthalmic solution. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip and do not let it touch your eye or any other surface. Remove your contact lenses before applying this medication. Wait at least 15 minutes before replacing your contacts. Use this medication on a regular basis to get the most benefit. Try taking it at the same time every day to help yourself remember.
Common adverse reactions that may result from using Xelpros include blurred vision, redness of the eye, changes in the growth of eyelashes, dry eye, eye pain, conjunctival hyperemia, lid crusting, or increased sensitivity to light. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients using this medication do not have any serious side effects.
Xelpros may cause brown discoloration of your iris over months or years of use. This color change may be permanent but the long-term effects are uncertain. Notify your doctor if this effect occurs and schedule regular eye exams to monitor it.
Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing.
Ask your doctor or healthcare provider for full medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Xelpros as this is not a complete list of side effects.
