Dupixent (dupilumab) is a brand-name prescription drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat a wide range of medical conditions. Healthcare providers may prescribe the injectable medicine for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, eosinophilic esophagitis, prurigo nodularis (PN), chronic rhinosinusitis, and others. “It is used to treat chronic inflammatory conditions by blocking specific proteins that control certain inflammatory pathways,” says Morris Nejat, MD, a physician specializing in adult and pediatric allergy and immunology, and medical director at NY Allergy and Sinus Centers in New York City. “Dupixent is administered by subcutaneous injection. It can be administered with a syringe or with an autopen.”

Currently, there is no generic form of Dupixent available, and even when patent protections expire a biosimilar would be what becomes available given this is a biologic medication made from living cells. The cost of this specialty medicine can range from $0 to $5,000 or more, depending on insurance coverage.

“The costs are largely set by the pharmaceutical companies,” says Purvi Parikh, MD, FACP, FACAAI, a board-certified pediatric allergist and immunologist with the Allergy & Asthma Network in New York City. “These costs are determined by several factors, including research, development costs, and manufacturing costs.” The dosage of Dupixent, your health insurance plan (and its drug formulary), and preferred pharmacy can also influence how much you pay for the prescription drug.

Is Dupixent covered by insurance?

Most commercial insurance plans and Medicare plans will cover Dupixent. “Dupixent is typically covered by insurance after a prior authorization is done,” Dr. Nejat says. Prior authorization (PA) is a process in which your healthcare provider must receive approval from your insurance provider that a certain medical service or medication is medically necessary for your health.

3. Consider state programs

Several states have State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs), which help residents pay for prescription drugs. Some states will offer wraparound prescription drug coverage for Medicare Part D, helping cover patients’ out-of-pocket costs that the health plan may not cover. 

You’ll first want to check that your state has a SPAP, see if you meet the eligibility requirements, and then apply online, by mail, or in person, depending on your state’s processes. 

4. Find a Dupixent alternative
