Is a Ubrelvy generic available?

There is no generic for Ubrelvy yet, but there are other generic migraine medications to consider
Spilled pill bottle: Is a Ubrelvy generic available?

Key takeaways

  • There are no generic versions of Ubrelvy at this time.

  • A generic version of Ubrelvy may become available in the mid-2030s.

  • Generic migraine treatment alternatives include triptans such as sumatriptan or rizatriptan, though these drugs differ in mechanism of action, dosing, effectiveness, and side effects.

Ubrelvy (ubrogepant) is a brand-name prescription medication for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adult patients. It works by blocking calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a protein that contributes to migraine severity and frequency. Ubrelvy treats migraine headaches when they happen, but does not prevent future migraines.

Like many brand-name prescriptions, Ubrelvy can be expensive. Unfortunately, it is not yet available as a generic. Keep reading to find out when you can expect generic Ubrelvy, what brand-name Ubrelvy costs, and how to save while waiting for a generic version.

Is there a generic for Ubrelvy?

There is currently no FDA-approved generic version of Ubrelvy. Pharmacists are likely to be the first healthcare professionals to find out when the generic version becomes available, according to Blair Gingerich, Pharm.D., an ambulatory care pharmacist in northern Indiana and a member of the SingleCare Medical Board.

In general, generic medications become available only after the brand-name drug’s patent and exclusivity rights expire. Drug company AbbVie still holds several patents for Ubrelvy, according to Lauren R. Natbony, MD, headache specialist and medical director of Integrative Headache Medicine of New York. ”[Some] don’t expire until the mid-2030s or later, making a true generic unlikely before then, unless another company successfully challenges the patents earlier, which is rare,” she says.

Is Ubrelvy covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage of Ubrelvy depends on your health insurance company and policy. Some commercial insurance plans and Medicare Part D plans do cover this specific CGRP inhibitor. The only way to know if your plan covers Ubrelvy is to contact your insurance provider.

Insurance plans that cover Ubrelvy may still require prior authorization. Insured patients’ copays (out-of-pocket costs) may also be high because many insurers categorize them in higher drug tiers, alongside other high-cost brand-name drugs and specialty medications.

In general, insurance providers tend to offer better coverage of generics than brand-name drugs. Some states even have mandatory substitution laws in which generic drugs are automatically used when available.

Generic alternatives to Ubrelvy

Generic drugs typically cost less than brand-name drugs. Currently, there are no generic CGRP inhibitors, but there are generic migraine medications.

“If a patient can’t afford Ubrelvy, I usually review whether a generic triptan might be a suitable alternative. They remain an effective first-line option for many people with migraine, ” Dr. Natbony says. Generic triptans for relief of migraine symptoms include:

Dr. Natbony says patients who cannot take triptans should check to see if their insurance plans cover any of these brand-name Ubrelvy alternatives:

In some cases, certain antidepressants or beta-blockers are also prescribed off-label to prevent migraines. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are interested in trying a generic antidepressant or beta-blocker to help minimize the frequency of future migraine attacks.

Bottom line: None of the above treatment options is an exact copy of Ubrelvy. They may have different results in clinical studies, active ingredients, possible uses, and potential adverse effects (such as drug interactions, serious side effects, or allergic reactions).  If you cannot afford Ubrelvy, seek medical advice from a healthcare professional to determine which Ubrelvy alternative is a good option for you.
