Amethyst contains the ingredients ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel. Amethyst itself is a generic version of Lybrel (no longer available). Amethyst is called a branded generic. It is a generic drug and has generic pricing, but it has a proprietary name.
Other 28-day birth control pills with ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel include Aubra, Lessina, and Setlakin (different dosages) among others. Use the SingleCare website or app to find information and coupons for these ethinyl estradiol-levonorgestrel generic alternatives.
Amethyst is a generic version of Lybrel, and contains ethinyl estradiol/levonorgestrel. It is a women's prescription birth control pill. Ethinyl estradiol is a synthetic estrogen that is similar to natural estrogen, levonorgestrel is a progestin hormone. Taken every day throughout the month, these hormones prevent ovulation, the monthly release of an egg from the ovaries. They also change the linings of the cervix and uterus. These changes impede the movement of sperm and prevent a fertilized egg from implanting on the uterine wall.
Amethyst is a “monophasic” birth control pill taken at the same dose daily, every day of the month. Unlike other birth control pills, however, Amethyst does not have a placebo (inactive pill) week. All tablets contain active medication, and you take Amethyst continuously every day. Most women who take Amethyst will stop getting their period.
Common side effects of Amethyst include but are not limited to nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, headache, breast tenderness, swelling, bloating, menstrual changes, and vaginal discomfort. Allergic reactions to Amethyst are extremely rare but include rashes and hives.
Mood changes are common and include mood swings, depression, and decreased sex drive.
Nursing mothers should avoid Amethyst because of the estrogen component. Besides decreasing breast milk, Amethyst may pass into the milk and can potentially affect the development of the infant.
