Ampyra is an extended-release prescription drug that helps patients with MS to walk and is currently the only drug on the market prescribed for that purpose. In the simplest possible terms, Ampyra allows nerves damaged by multiple sclerosis to generate enough electrical potential to send signals to the muscles in the legs. Multiple sclerosis is a condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the central nervous system as if the nerve cells within it were an infection. The swelling caused by this immune reaction wears away the protective sheath (the myelin sheath) that surrounds every part of a nerve cell. As this sheath wears away, the nerve is unable to generate enough electrical potential to pass signals down its length. The end result is to block the ability of the patient's brain and spinal cord to send signals to the leg muscles, and walking becomes difficult. The active ingredient in Ampyra, dalfampridine, works by blocking a particular mechanism that goes wrong in neurons damaged by MS, the potassium channel, which, when it turns on, is the mechanism that returns nerves to their original voltage and so stops nerve signals from getting through. By blocking the potassium channel, dalfampridine gives damaged nerves enough time to send a signal down the length of the nerve before it's blocked. Ampyra is taken as a tablet twice daily.
