What is Mono-Linyah?
Mono-Linyah is a generic birth control pill with the hormones ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen, and norgestimate, a progestin. When taken over a 28-day sequence, these hormones prevent ovulation and change the linings along the cervix and uterus. By preventing the release of an egg, Mono-Linyah dramatically reduces the risk of an egg being fertilized. By changing the tissues in the uterus and cervix, Mono-Linyah slows down the movement of sperm and greatly reduces the chances that a fertilized egg will attach to the uterine wall.
While most birth control pills use natural hormones, norgestimate is a synthetic progestin, but it has fewer and less severe side effects.
Mono-Linyah taken on a 28-day cycle. In the first three weeks of the 28-day fertility cycle, Mono-Linyah is taken at a constant dose. This constant dose makes it a “monophasic” birth control pill. The final 7 tablets of the sequence have no active ingredients in order to allow for menstruation. They function as “reminder” pills so that the patient knows precisely what day to restart the birth control cycle.
What are the side effects of Mono-Linyah?
Common side effects of Mono-Linyah include but are not limited to breast tenderness, headache, nausea, and irregular uterine bleeding. Serious but rare side effects may include heart problems, stroke, and liver problems. Allergic reactions to Mono-Linyah are rare and are usually due to the inactive ingredients in Mono-Linyah. These allergic reactions are often due to the inactive ingredients in Mono-Linyah.
Nursing mothers should avoid Mono-Linyah because estrogens such as ethinyl estradiol reduce breast milk production. Estrogens also pass into the milk and affect the development of the infant. Nursing mothers requiring birth control are often prescribed “mini-pills,” whose only active ingredient is a progestin.
