The active ingredient in Periomed is stannous fluoride or tin fluoride. It is a common ingredient in over-the-counter toothpaste such as Crest Pro Health. Stannous fluoride is more effective at preventing cavities and controlling gingivitis than sodium fluoride. It has a longer shelf life and additional antimicrobial properties that work against microbes for up to six hours after rinsing.
Periomed is taken as a one fluid ounce rinse every day following tooth brushing.
What are the side effects of Periomed?
The most common side effect of stannous fluoride is tooth staining, so regular tooth brushing is advised to patients using high concentration stannous fluoride products. Other common side effects of Periomed include mouth sores. For most patients, Periomed leaves a bad aftertaste in the mouth, sometimes for hours. Allergic reactions are rare. Discontinue using Periomed if you notice facial or mouth swelling, itching, rash, or other allergic symptoms after using Periomed.
