Stendra is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat male erectile dysfunction. The active ingredient in Stendra is avanafil. Stendra is taken 15 to 30 minutes prior to intercourse, depending on the dose. As a PDE5 inhibitor, Stendra works by increasing the flow of blood to the penis and helps men to achieve and maintain an erection. In order to work, Stendra must be accompanied by sexual stimulation.
This medication does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. In order to decrease your risk of infection, you should always use protection during all sexual activity.
Speak to your doctor before using Stendra to ensure that this medication is right for you. Ensure you share all relevant information including your full medical history of health problems you may be suffering from and medications that you are currently on. This is important for your doctor to understand your current health condition. Your doctor may also need this information to assess possible complications of Stendra with any medications that you're currently using. For example, Stendra should not be taken in combination with nitrates such as nitroglycerin.
Common side effects of using Stendra include headache, flushing, blurred vision, dizziness, nervousness, and pounding in the ears. If you experience dizziness or feel lightheaded, be careful and get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. This will reduce your risk of falling.
Engaging in sexual activity may put additional strain on the heart, especially if you have any heart conditions. If you experience serious side effects while having sex, such as feeling faint, dizzy, or experiencing chest or back pains, you should stop and seek medical attention right away.
You should stop using Stendra and seek emergency medical assistance if you experience sudden vision loss. In some rare cases, this medication may cause a sudden decrease in blood flow to the optic nerve of the eye and cause vision loss. You are at a greater risk of this occurring if you are over 50 years old, smoke, or have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult a healthcare professional for medical advice about the risks and benefits of using Stendra.
