Discount Pet Meds & Resources

The average pet owner spends about $1,515 on their pets per year, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. About one-third of that spending is allocated to veterinary care, including medications. Because the majority of pet owners view their pet as a member of their family, many (up to 75% according to various surveys) are reportedly willing to go into debt to pay for medical care for their pets. Fortunately, there are savings options available for pet prescriptions to ease the financial burden of caring for our furry friends, including free coupons for pet meds from SingleCare.

How to save money on pet prescriptions

Some financial resources for pet prescriptions include pet insurance, grants from animal welfare nonprofits, and prescription discount cards.

Although pet insurance does cover some medications, it does not typically cover incurable pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, and arthritis, which, unfortunately, are the most expensive conditions to treat. If your pet has been diagnosed with these conditions prior to obtaining pet insurance, their treatment will likely not be covered.

Grants from nonprofits, like RedRover, are certainly helpful but have eligibility requirements that you or your pet may not meet.

Fortunately, SingleCare’s prescription discount card is always free, and as long as you have a valid prescription for a medication that is also used for humans, you can use it for your pet. There are many human medications that are prescribed by veterinarians to treat various conditions in pets, including antibiotics, anti-anxiety medications, and pain relievers.

Is there a prescription discount card for pets?

Yes, SingleCare’s prescription discount card works for pet medications too. Most medications that you would pick up at your regular pharmacy are eligible for SingleCare savings when you bring your pet’s prescription to the counter. SingleCare coupons also work for over-the-counter medications, like Zyrtec and Benadryl, as long as your veterinarian writes a prescription for them.

Does pet insurance cover medication?

Pet insurance covers many prescriptions for injuries or illnesses; however, some providers will exclude certain medications used to treat pre-existing conditions. Typically, over-the-counter medicine, vitamins, supplements, and prescription food may not be covered by pet insurance. Some plans offer optional add-ons for routine care expenses like flea, tick, and heartworm medications.

What are the conditions that pet insurance doesn’t cover?

Pet insurance does not cover conditions that were diagnosed or evident before the start of the policy or during the waiting period. This includes conditions that your pet showed symptoms of prior to being insured, even if they didn’t receive a diagnosis at that time. For example, if your pet showed signs of diabetes that were documented in your pet’s medical records, your insurer may deny coverage of insulin.

Additionally, cosmetic procedures, spaying or neutering, vitamins, supplements, prescription food, and preventatives (like heartworm, flea, and ticket medications) are not usually covered by pet insurance.
