What is Camila?

Camila is a generic women's birth control pill with norethindrone, a naturally occurring female hormone (progestin), as the active ingredient. Taken daily, Camila helps prevent ovulation (the release of an egg by the ovaries) and changes the cervical and uterine linings to prevent sperm movement and fertilized egg attachment.

Progestin-only birth control pills are called “mini-pills,” because most birth control pills combine progestin with another female hormone, estrogen. Mini-pills are prescribed to nursing women because estrogen decreases milk production, as well as to women who smoke or have high blood pressure. Mini-pills are less effective than two-hormone pills—40% of women continue to ovulate on the mini-pill and 3% get pregnant. It is important to use other forms of birth control while on Camila.
