Levonorgestrel-Ethinyl Estrad

Lutera is a women's generic birth control pill. Lutera combines two naturally occurring hormones, ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen, and levonorgestrel, a progestin. These hormones prevent ovulation. They also change the cervical and uterine linings to slow sperm movement and prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterine wall. On average, the cash price for Lutera is $57.33. A SingleCare Lutera coupon, however, reduces the price to $7.25. Many local pharmacies – CVS, Target, Walmart, and more, accept SingleCare savings coupons.

What is Lutera?

Lutera is a generic version of ethinyl estradiol/levonorgestrel, a women's prescription birth control pill. Ethinyl estradiol is naturally occurring estrogen hormone, levonorgestrel a naturally-occurring progestin hormone. Taken throughout the month, these hormones prevent ovulation, the monthly release of an egg from the ovaries. They also change the linings of the cervix and uterus. These changes impede the movement of sperm and prevent a fertilized egg from implanting on the uterine wall.

Lutera, like other birth control pills, is not 100% effective at preventing pregnancy, so it is typically used with other birth control methods.

Lutera is taken daily in a 28-day sequence. It is a “monophasic” oral contraceptive, that is, the dose of each active ingredient remains the same for 21 of the 28-day sequence. The final seven tablets, however, are inert and taken at the end of the monthly cycle to promote menstruation.

What are the side effects of Lutera?

Common side effects of Lutera include but are not limited to swelling, bloating, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, headache, breast tenderness, menstrual changes, and vaginal itching and discharge. Mood changes are common and include mood swings, depression, and decreased sex drive. Allergic reactions to Lutera are extremely rare but include rashes and hives.

Nursing mothers should avoid Lutera because estrogens, besides decreasing breast milk, pass into the milk and affect the development of the infant.
