Paxil is currently manufactured by Apotex Corporation. Paroxetine is the generic version of Paxil.
Paxil is commonly used to treat depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. This drug works by helping to restore the balance of serotonin (a natural substance in the brain).
Paxil belongs to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drug class. This prescription drug is thought to improve mood, sleep, appetite, and energy levels. It may also help restore your interest in daily living. Using Paxil can reduce fear, anxiety, unwanted thoughts, panic attacks, and an urge to repeatedly perform unnecessary tasks.
It is important to continuously use Paxil even if your depression improves. Do not stop using Paxil without consulting your doctor.
Before using this drug it is strongly advised that you consult with your doctor first to ensure that this drug is right for you. Tell your doctor about your medical conditions and history, as well as all the medicines you take. This includes Rx, OTC, vitamins, and supplements. This information will help your doctor decide if Paxil is safe for you. For example, Paxil should never be taken within 14 days of a type of drug called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Another example is when Paxil is combined with another drug or drugs that increase serotonin levels, there is a possibility of serotonin syndrome, a life-threatening condition caused by the buildup of serotonin.
The most common side effects associated with using Paxil include sexual problems, weakness, appetite loss, dizziness, dry mouth, trouble sleeping, nervousness, sleepiness, sweating, tremors, and yawning. Stomach problems like nausea, constipation, or diarrhea can also occur.
Less common, but serious side effects may include bleeding, blood vessel problems, and severe skin reactions. If you have a rash and blistering of the skin, get medical attention right away. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling around the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get medical attention right away. Get medical help right away if you have agitation, hallucinations, stiff muscles, dizziness, tingling, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sweating, tremor, racing heartbeat, or a seizure. Also, in some cases, people who take antidepressants have suicidal thoughts and behaviors. If you have any mood changes, notify your doctor right away, and tell your loved ones to look for mood changes when you take Paxil.
When discontinuing Paxil, your doctor will provide you with a tapering schedule. Stopping this medication suddenly may cause withdrawal symptoms. Mood swings, headache, tiredness, sleep changes, and brief feelings similar to electric shock may occur. To prevent these symptoms while you are stopping treatment with this drug, your doctor may reduce your dose over an extended length of time.
Before taking Paxil, talk to your doctor about what side effects to expect and how to address them, as this is not a full list of side effects.
Consult your healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding side effects or drug interactions.
