How to save money on allergy medicine

Most insurance plans will cover prescription allergy testing, medications, and shots if deemed medically necessary by a healthcare provider. Your copay will depend on your insurance plan’s formulary and whether you’ve met your deductible.

However, commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid do not cover OTC medications like Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claritin, and Allegra without a prescription. You may receive some coverage if your healthcare provider writes a prescription for an OTC product. In that case, compare your copay with the price on SingleCare.

How to use SingleCare on over-the-counter allergy meds

Using a SingleCare coupon is easy, even on OTC meds.

  1. Get a valid prescription. If your provider recommends an OTC medication, ask them to write a prescription for it.

  3. Enter the correct form, dosage, and quantity for your prescription to ensure that you receive the most accurate price at the pharmacy.

What is the most popular allergy medicine?

According to a SingleCare survey, 78% of people with allergies reportedly take allergy medicine, 50% of which are antihistamines. Generic Zyrtec (cetirizine) was the most commonly filled antihistamine in 2024, according to SingleCare prescription fill data. Allegra-D was the most commonly filled decongestant, according to SingleCare data.

What is the cheapest way to get allergy medication?

The cheapest way to get allergy medication is to ask your healthcare provider to write a prescription, even if the medication is available over the counter. If your provider writes a prescription, insurance may cover some of the cost, or you could use a SingleCare savings card.

Will insurance pay for allergy meds?

Insurance will only cover allergy meds if you have a prescription. Even with a prescription, your plan may not offer coverage for all allergy medications, and you may still owe a copay. Refer to your plan’s formulary to find out which allergy meds are covered.

How much does allergy testing cost?

Allergy testing prices range from $60 to $1,000, depending on the type of test you need. Skin tests are cheaper ($60 to $300) and are more often covered by insurance. Blood tests can cost $200 to $1,000 and may not be covered by insurance.

Are allergy shots worth it?

People with persistent and/or severe allergy symptoms may consider allergy shots, especially if they don’t get relief from other treatments. Allergy shots are very time-intensive, requiring weekly appointments to receive one to four injections for three to six months, and then one shot once or twice per month for three to five years. However, allergy shots can be life-changing for people with severe symptoms.

You can use SingleCare to save on allergy shots and sublingual therapy, including Odactra, Grastek, Oralair, and Ragwitek.
