Betaseron is an FDA-approved brand-name prescription injection prescribed to patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks nerve cells and slowly damages the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. The active ingredient in Betaseron, interferon beta-1a, prevents damage and decreases inflammation by slowing down the attack of the body’s defense cells on the nervous system. Betaseron costs $11,563.87 at full price. A SingleCare Betaseron coupon may reduce that price to $8,868.64.

Betaseron is a brand-name prescription drug that treats relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a disorder that progressively damages the spine, brain, and optic nerves. As an autoimmune disorder, multiple sclerosis develops when the body’s own defense cells attack nerves in the central nervous system. Damage and inflammation can cause nerves to lose their protective covering—the myelin sheath. As the myelin degenerates, nerves lose their ability to send signals and eventually die. Patients with MS develop scar tissue (sclerosis) throughout the central nervous system as the nerves die off.
The exact way in which Betaseron works is unclear. However, it is believed to regulate suppressor T cell activity and decrease inflammatory cytokine production. In this way, Betaseron can help decrease inflammation and reduce damage to the nerve cells.
Betaseron is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) every other day for six weeks. A healthcare provider usually administers the first dose. Subsequent doses may then be self-administered with a prefilled syringe or auto-injector.
The most common side effects of Betaseron are site reactions around the area of injection, including pain, swelling, redness, or a hard lump. Betaseron can also cause flu-like symptoms that begin shortly after the injection and end one or two days after. Other common side effects of Betaseron include, but are not limited to, headache, stomach pain, muscle aches, weakness, rash, trouble sleeping, and changes in white blood cell counts and liver enzyme levels.
The most serious side effects of Betaseron include heart problems like congestive heart failure, seizures, and kidney and liver problems. Betaseron may also cause mental and mood changes, including depression, suicidal thoughts, and psychosis.
Allergic reactions are also possible with Betaseron. Reported allergic reactions include anaphylaxis, a dangerous drop in blood pressure, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a severe skin reaction over the entire body that often requires hospitalization. If you experience an allergic reaction to Betaseron with symptoms such as rash, itching, hives, or wheezing, seek immediate medical attention.
