Bimzelx is an injectable prescription drug used to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults who are appropriate candidates. The active ingredient in Bimzelx is called bimekizumab-bkzx, and it is classified as a monoclonal antibody—more specifically, it is classified as an interleukin-17 antagonist. Bimzelx works on the immune system and helps prevent inflammation. Bimzelx is not approved for use in children.
Bimzelx is not a cure for psoriasis but helps control the symptoms. Before you start treatment with Bimzelx, your healthcare provider may recommend certain labs or tests. They may also recommend you get certain vaccines before starting Bimzelx.
Bimzelx is available as a prefilled syringe as well as a prefilled autoinjector. Bimzelx is injected subcutaneously, which means under the skin. It can be injected into the thigh, stomach, or upper arm by a healthcare provider or caregiver—or it can be injected into the thigh or stomach if you inject yourself.
Bimzelx is given as two injections at weeks 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16. After that, it is given every 8 weeks. Your first dose will be given in your doctor’s office. After that, with proper training, your healthcare provider may allow you or a caregiver to administer the injections at home. Your healthcare provider will train you to prepare and administer the injection. You should always rotate injection sites with each injection so that you do not use the same site twice in a row.
Do not inject Bimzelx into any area where the skin is bruised, red, hard, or tender—or where you have stretch marks or scars. You should not inject Bimzelx in any areas affected by psoriasis.
Common side effects of Bimzelx include:
Headache
Cold sores on the mouth and/or lips
Red bumps on the skin
Fatigue
Yeast infection of the mouth, throat, skin, nails, feet, or genitals
Injection site reactions (pain, redness, and swelling where the medicine was injected)
Stomach problems such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
Acne
Serious side effects may occur. Some patients have suicidal thoughts or behaviors. If you have any changes in mood or behavior, or have thoughts of suicide, call your healthcare provider right away or call 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
Bimzelx can also interfere with the body’s ability to fight infection, which can increase the risk of a serious or life-threatening infection. Call your doctor right away if you have any signs or symptoms of infection, such as fever, chills, muscle aches, difficulty breathing, warm or red skin, sores on the body, diarrhea, painful urination, or other concerning symptoms.
Bimzelx also increases the risk of a serious lung infection called tuberculosis (TB). Your healthcare provider will test you for TB before you take Bimzelx. Let your doctor know right away if you have symptoms such as cough (including if there is blood or mucus when you cough), fatigue, appetite and weight loss, fever, chills, or night sweats.
Bimzelx can affect the liver. Let your healthcare provider know right away if you have stomach pain, fatigue, appetite loss, nausea, vomiting, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or yellowing of the skin or whites of your eyes.
This is not a full list of side effects and others may occur. Consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for more information and questions about side effects.
The usual dose of Bimzelx is 320 mg, which is given as two injections of 160 mg each. This dose is given at weeks 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16, then every 8 weeks after that.
For people who weigh 264 pounds or more, healthcare professionals may recommend continuing with the 320 mg dose every 4 weeks after week 16, rather than every 8 weeks.
If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as possible. Then, resume your regular schedule. If your healthcare provider injects your medication and you miss an appointment, call your provider as soon as possible for instructions.
Before taking Bimzelx, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Also, tell your provider about any allergies to medications—as well as all of the medications you take. This includes prescription drugs, OTC medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
You should not take Bimzelx if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication. You should not use Bimzelx if you have liver disease or cirrhosis (permanent scarring of the liver) due to the increased risk of severe liver damage. People with an active infection should not start taking Bimzelx until the infection is resolved or treated.
While you are using Bimzelx, you should not receive a live vaccine. Examples of live vaccines include the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccine (MMR), the nasal flu vaccine, and the rotavirus vaccine.
Bimzelx may also interact with certain other drugs, such as warfarin or cyclosporine. Ask your healthcare provider for more information about drug interactions and how they affect you.
