Antidepressants Coupons & Resources

More than 1 in 10 people in the U.S. take antidepressants, which are commonly prescribed medications for treating not only depressive disorders, but also anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, fibromyalgia, hot flashes, migraine prevention, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more. There are several classes of antidepressants, with the most common being selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Antidepressants can be expensive without insurance, but generic versions tend to be more affordable. A SingleCare prescription discount card can help as well, saving people up to 80% on their prescriptions.

How to save money on antidepressants

Most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover antidepressants, although they’re more likely to cover generic antidepressants than brand-name antidepressants. You may have to pay a copay or coinsurance for your prescription, depending on the specifics of your insurance’s drug formulary. Free SingleCare coupons can help you save on antidepressants if you don’t have health insurance or if your antidepressants are too expensive with insurance. You can use SingleCare if you have health insurance, but you can’t use it with insurance.

FAQs about antidepressants

Do antidepressants cause weight gain?

Antidepressants may cause weight gain in some people, but not everyone responds to antidepressants the same way. Some antidepressants are more likely to cause weight gain than others. For example, Remeron (mirtazapine) has a higher risk of causing weight gain than Wellbutrin (bupropion), which may actually cause weight loss.

Can you drink on antidepressants?

You shouldn’t mix antidepressants and alcohol. Doing so can make symptoms of depression and anxiety worse and cause other side effects, which can be dangerous. For example, drinking alcohol while taking MAOIs can cause dangerous spikes in blood pressure.

Can you take antidepressants while pregnant?

Since there hasn’t been evidence of birth defects from antidepressants, healthcare providers generally recommend that pregnant mothers stay on their antidepressants when the benefits outweigh the risks, which may include neonatal adaptation syndrome. If you become pregnant while taking antidepressants, let your healthcare provider know as soon as possible so they can recommend whether to stay on your antidepressant or switch to one with fewer risks.

How long does it take for antidepressants to work?

It could take up to eight weeks for antidepressants to work, but some people start to notice improvement in their symptoms much sooner. It ultimately depends on the type of antidepressant and what the antidepressant is being used to treat.

How much do antidepressants cost without insurance?

The cost of antidepressants without insurance varies, but you may pay about $50 for a month’s supply of generic antidepressants versus close to $500 or more for a month’s supply of brand-name antidepressants. A SingleCare prescription discount card can help you save up to 80%.

What are the most common side effects of antidepressants?

The most common side effects of antidepressants include weight changes, sexual problems, nausea, and headaches. However, side effects vary by antidepressant and tend to decrease once the body gets used to the medication.
