What is Vivelle-Dot?

Vivelle-Dot is a brand-name prescription patch that contains estradiol, an estrogen. Vivelle-Dot is prescribed to menopausal women with a uterus to alleviate physical symptoms caused by menopause, such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and bone loss (osteoporosis). Vivelle-Dot is also prescribed to women whose ovaries have stopped producing estrogen or who have had their ovaries surgically removed.

Vivelle-Dot is applied semi-weekly to a dry area of the skin on the trunk of the body, which includes the abdomen and gluteal area. It should not be applied to the breasts. Vivelle-Dot should be replaced twice per week. It is available as a patch in a strength of 0.025 mg/day, 0.0375 mg/day, 0.05 mg/day, 0.075 mg/day, and 0.1 mg/day.

What are the side effects of Vivelle-Dot?

Common side effects of Vivelle-Dot include but are not limited to headache, breast tenderness, irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, and fluid retention. The most serious side effects of Vivelle-Dot are rare but include blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, and breast or ovarian cancer. Allergic reactions are uncommon but may present as rashes or hives. Mood changes are rare but include anxiety and depression.
